Breastfeeding: Different Stages Involved
The breastfeeding process is the natural way to feed the newborn child. Initially, it can be tough for new mother and child, but gradually they get adopted by the process. It should start from the first hours of the birth of the baby. Breast milk fulfills the needs of the baby and supports his immune system until regular milk starts coming in. Breastfeeding should be continued at least for six months or even more. It reduces the risk of several diseases in both child’s and mother’s life. Also, it reduces the chances of acute and chronic diseases in a child. It increases the physical contact between mother and child, which increase the bond between them.
Breast milk keeps on evolving every day as you start breastfeeding. There are three stages until the mother produces full regular milk:
- Colostrum – It is a yellowish sticky substance that produces in the initial stage. Colostrum gives all the required nutrients your infant wants to fight infections. It also contains antibodies which provide a natural immunity to child. These antibodies help to fight with various diseases naturally and block many viruses. It is produced in a small quantity as it is initial days.
- Transitional milk- After four to five days of birth, colostrum starts changing into milk not mature milk but in between of both. It is orangish color substance, little watery in texture.
- Mature milk- As the days pass, till the second week, milk starts coming. It is regular milk, white in color and resembles to skim milk.

- Breastfeeding burns calories, which means the new mother can start losing weight while breastfeeding.
- Breast milk contains antibodies which fight against infections and disease.
- Colostrum contain proteins which protect the intestine and develop the natural immune system.
- During the breastfeeding process, the brain produces oxytocin hormones which develop a bond between child and mother. It also helps the mother to be stress-free and reduces anxiety.
- It is easily digestible food for newborn babies. It reduces the chances of obesity in the child.
- Breast milk reduces the chances of ear infection, diarrhea, respiratory diseases in the child.
- Texture, smell, and taste of milk depending on the intake of the mother. It depends on mothers diet what taste child will develop in later stages.
- Breast milk changes every day, every week to satisfies the infant needs.
- Some people also use formula milk in place of breast milk. It is of no harm, but natural milk from the breast has many benefits which cannot be substituted.
- A mother who breastfeeds has less the chances and risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
Breastfeeding is the natural way to provide milk to the infant. It gives nutrition to the newborn in the initial months of life. Also, it satisfies the infant’s hunger.
